When Mindfulness Backfires (and When It Works)

Collective mindfulness at work is often seen as a good thing—and it can be.

Our research (published in the Journal of Business Research) shows that it can boost employees’ energy. But it’s not always positive.

When trust is low, high collective mindfulness can actually increase feelings of isolation. Being more aware doesn’t help if the social foundation isn’t there—it may even make disconnection more visible.

The key takeaway:
Mindfulness works best when trust is in place. Without it, it can backfire.
